2 new strains of fentanyl are resistant to Narcan

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirms two new strains of fentanyl that are so potent they are resistant to the lifesaving antidote for overdoses Narcan.

GBI said the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office submitted forensic drug evidence containing the acrylfentanyl and tetrahydrofuran fentanyl in March.

The state officially outlawed acrylfentanyl in April, but tetrahydrofuran fentanyl is so new that it's not on the state's banned synthetic designer drugs list. Officials warn it's not clear how the human body will respond to the drug.

Police warn that simply touching any form of fentanyl or fentanyl residue could result in a life-threatening overdose.

On Tuesday, a report released by the state of Kentucky found that more than half of all overdose deaths in 2016 were connected to fentanyl
