LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 13-year-old Indiana boy was shot in the head during a 4th of July celebration, and police say it looks like an accident.

It happened Saturday in Hammond, Indiana, near Gary.

The boy was playing basketball when he fell to the ground.

His friends thought he was having a seizure, but when he got to the hospital, they found he had been shot in the head.

Police say it appears to be an accident, likely caused by someone firing a gun into the air to celebrate the 4th of July.

"Unfortunately, a lot of times when this situation happens, people are firing guns off in a celebratory way, and those bullets have to come down, and they strike vehicles, they strike houses, yards, and occasionally they strike people," Lt. Steve Kellogg with Hammond Police said.

Hammond Police are still looking for the person who fired the gun.

The boy is in critical condition.
