On first holiday without him, family remembers Dequante Hobbs with fireworks

Posted: Updated:

It's their first holiday without him. Family members of Dequante Hobbs remember the 7-year-old on his favorite day of the year.

The young boy's story is inspiring celebrities and people across the country.

The 7-year-old was killed by a stray bullet in May. His murder is still unsolved.

"Being without him for the first time is hard," said Hobbs' mother, Micheshia Norment. "It took me a minute to even get up earlier. I couldn't even get up til 3 o'clock."

Through her grief, Dequante's mother joined the family to celebrate the 4th by celebrating her son's young life.

"Fireworks were his big thing. He would watch them on his tablet and then he'd be like, 'Mommy, I want a whole lot of fireworks!'" Norment recalled.

"We got as many fireworks as we can, to let them all go off, in celebration of my baby boy," said his father, Dequante Hobbs, Sr. "May he rest in peace."

The family just returned from a trip to the Essence Festival in New Orleans.

They were honored at center court during the Master P Celebrity Basketball Game.

Dequante's name was also featured on t-shirts for the National Day of Peace, where 75,000 people pledged to stop the violence nationwide.

"God gave him to us for a minute, but He gave him to us for a purpose," said grandmother Tonya Hobbs Gough. "(God) took him away from us for a purpose, and His purpose is to inspire, and let people know that we need to come together to love one another."

It's inspiration the family hopes can reach the streets in Louisville.

"My son's name will be carried on, no matter what," said Norment.

Anyone with information about the shooter should call 574-LMPD. Callers can remain anonymous.
