GCCS voting Wednesday on plan to combine two Jeffersonville elementary schools

Posted: Updated:

JEFFERSONVILLE, In. (WDRB) -- The Greater Clark County School Board is scheduled to vote Wednesday on the Jeffersonville Elementary Transition Plan.

If the plan is approved, Maple and Spring Hill elementary schools would close and students would attend a new elementary school in downtown Jeffersonville.

Students would transition to the new school as early as the 2019-2020 school year. But the city and school board still need to find a site, determine the costs, and get the community on board with building a new school in downtown Jeffersonville.

The district is looking at two sites for the new school, one on Court Avenue where the district already owns several buildings, and the other is a bus depot at 12th and Walnut streets.

Maple Elementary students would attend Bridgepoint Elementary, and Spring Hill students would go to Northaven.

A newer proposal would keep both schools open during construction of the new downtown school.

The mayor and superintendent say the new plan is the only feasible way to keep students in a downtown school.
