LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police say a suspected drug trafficker used a 2-year-old girl as a human shield as officers repeatedly tried to arrest him.

According to an arrest report, it happened on Tuesday, July 4, just after 1:30 p.m. at a home in the 2200 block of Flint Hill Road in Senora, Kentucky.

Kentucky State Police say 44-year-old Lewis Day had already been indicted on charges related to drug trafficking and firearm possession, and they were there to serve a warrant. When officers arrived at the home, they knew Day was inside, but he refused to come to the door.

After knocking on the door and announcing themselves several times, officers kicked the door in and entered the home.

Police say they came through a locked bedroom door, and found Day inside, lying on the floor next to the bed, on top of a 2-year-old girl. Officers demanded that he get up and show his hands, but he refused, according to the arrest report, instead sitting up and pulling the child up so that she was between himself and the officers.

Police say he was "frantically moving his arms up, then down, and then around the kid in what appeared to be a bear hug." Officers repeatedly asked him to let the child go and show his hands, but Day instead jerked his hands down in the direction of the child and his waistband.

According to the arrest report, officers then twice tazed Day, before grabbing the child and pulling her out of the room.

Day was taken into custody and Child Protective Services was notified of the incident.

Day is now charged with resisting arrest, endangering the welfare of a minor and first degree wanton endangerment. He is currently being held in the Hardin County Detention Center.
