Kentucky woman okay after being hit by stray bullet on Fourth of July

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Kentucky woman is miraculously okay after she was hit in the head by a stray bullet on the Fourth of July.

Debbie Dunaway says she and her husband were on a boat in a river in Beattyville on Tuesday night watching fireworks, when she suddenly felt a sting on the back of her head.

At first, Dunaway thought it was a bug bite or maybe she was hit by a firework -- but then her husband noticed blood. The pain started to get worse, and the couple realized she had been shot.

"It felt like somebody had took a big hammer and hit me as hard as they could in the back of the head," Dunaway said.

Doctors say they think the bullet came from a rifle, and probably ricocheted before hitting her. They also say that, had the bullet hit her anywhere else on the head, she might have died.

Dunaway says she's not in any pain at all now, but will go back for a check-up in a couple of days.
