Indiana man makes a commitment to his bride by also proposing to her sister with special needs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A package deal makes for a sweet proposal.

Ashley and Hannah Schaus are sisters and best friends.

The Santa Claus, Indiana, sisters are eight years apart. Hannah is almost 16, and has Down Syndrome and Diabetes.

"Whenever Hannah was born, my parents explained to me that she would have special needs throughout her life," Ashley Schaus said.

When Ashley started dating Will seven years ago, she made things clear.

"We're a package deal, you have to accept Hannah ... she'll always be with me," Schaus said. "There will be a day when my parents can no longer take care of Hannah as well."

He took it seriously. He taught Hannah to fish, and the three are almost always together.

"He's amazing is what she said, what else. He's cute. He's cute, yeah, and he's sweet," Schaus said.

During their annual spring photoshoot, Will had a surprise.

"He got down on one knee and asked her to be his best friend forever ... I was bawling my eyes out. If I'm next I'm going to look horrible," Schaus said.

Both sisters got heirloom rings, and a commitment from Will.

"Her expression was priceless," Schaus said.

While it happened in March of 2016, their story has just now gained traction by USA Today, Yahoo news and other national news outlets.

Hannah gets the title of "Best Sister" at their wedding in October, and even gets to wear a wedding dress that looks like her sister's.

Most brides soak up the once in a lifetime limelight, but Ashley is sharing hers.

"The marriage isn't about the bride and the flowers. [Bring] family into the picture and sometimes that includes extra special people," Schaus said.
