LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Ten years ago, workers found 4-year-old Cesar Ivan Cano's body in a garbage truck near his apartment complex in south Louisville.

On Friday night the community marked the anniversary of his murder. Some of them didn't even know Ivan, but they were all touched by his story.

"I was sitting at home. I was just getting off of work, and I remember it like it was today," said Priscilla Norment, who's 7-year-old grandson Dequante Hobbs was shot and killed earlier this year.

Saturday will mark 10 years since sanitation workers found the 4-year-old's body in a garbage truck after the week-long search. Organizer Christopher 2x and a small group gathered behind Ivan's old apartment complex near Churchill Downs on Friday to remember him.

"The day he was found ... you could almost hear a pin drop in this city," Christopher 2X said.

And just like a decade ago, the community came together, leaving a makeshift memorial of toys and trucks to honor his memory.

"Every piece of his spirit that has touched this community in many ways," Christopher 2X said.

Norment felt the need to stop by Friday to show support for a family that went through a similar tragedy that she's facing right now.

"I feel her pain," she said. "Just keep praying like I do. I keep praying every day that someone find who kill my grandbaby."

Organizers also used the occasion to announce a new support group called "Justice 4 Lil 1's." Dequante's mother started it for parents who've lost their children.

"This campaign is going to allow her to not erase the pain she's dealing with but to cope with it better by doing good deeds toward other survivors," Christopher 2X said.

Cecil New pleaded guilty back in 2010 to killing Ivan. The judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole.
