Facebook video of woman smoking meth pipe allegedly leads to arrest of Seymour suspects
Police say a child's voice can be heard on the video -- and that led to even more charges.
SEYMOUR, Ind. (WDRB) -- A Seymour woman and her father have both been arrested after police said a video of the woman smoking methamphetamine was posted to Facebook.
According to Assistant Chief of Police Craig Hayes, Seymour Police were notified of the video on July 6. Hayes said the video appeared to show Brittany Stafford, 31, smoking a glass meth pipe. In the background was a man, identified as 56-year-old James Stafford, Brittany's father. Police said a child's voice can also be heard in the video.
Hayes said police eventually located Brittany and James Stafford at an apartment complex in the 2700 block of Bent Tree Lane off Highway 31 in Seymour.
Police said when they met with Brittany Stafford, she admitted to having a meth addiction and to smoking meth recently. She had three children, ages 9, 10 and 13, and they had all been staying in her father's apartment.
"She admitted to the detectives that was her in the video and that she had been smoking meth at that time," Seymour Assistant Chief of Police Craig Hayes said..
Police say she told them she knew about the Facebook video. She allegedly said it was months old and had been posted by an ex-boyfriend she'd had a falling-out with.
Investigators were able to confirm that the child's voice in the video was that of her 9-year-old son.
Police said they eventually obtained a search warrant. Upon searching the home, they allegedly found a small amount of marijuana and methamphetamine, as well as pipes and other drug paraphernalia.
Child Protective Services was notified and the children were promptly removed from the home.
"You hear about these type of things, but when you see it on the video, it's a different story," Hayes said. "Especially when you hear the child in the background."
Both Brittany Stafford and James Stafford were arrested and charged with maintaining a common nuisance and neglect of a dependent. Brittany Stafford is also charged with possession of meth, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
They are currently being held in the Jackson County Detention Center.
