LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- On Saturday afternoon, Shay Kittrell heard several gunshots in the Park Hill neighborhood.

A short time later, a family friend shared devastating news.

"He stopped me and told me it was my momma," she said.

Stephanie Kittrell, 50, was shot to death Saturday while running an errand.

"I would never thought to come see my momma with holes in her body," Shay Kittrell said.

Even worse, Stephanie Kittrell died at the scene near a memorial for her murdered son at 12th and Hill Streets. Though it had been several years, family members said she died with a broken heart, still grieving the death of her son, 24-year old Ramone Shirley.

In 2009, Shirley was featured and named a murder suspect in an episode of The First 48,  but he was shot and killed before he could stand trial. Family members said Kittrell was still grieving when she took her last breath.

"The victim here is is not your typical homicide victim," said Lt. Emily McKinley with the LMPD Homicide Unit.

McKinley said detectives have some good leads but still don't know if Stephanie Kittrell was the actual target.

"So that is important for our case, to determine is she the intended target or is there somebody else that she happened to be in the crossfire," McKinley said.

Even if she was not the intended target, family members are angry and want answers and justice.

"I don't know if it was an accident or on purpose, but my momma don't mess with nobody," Shay Kittrell said.

Right now, homicide detectives are looking at surveillance video from the area. They also want to hear from anyone with information about the case.

If you have any information, you can call the anonymous tip line at 574-LMPD.
