Louisville teen charged with more than 20 counts of auto theft
Authorities have not said when and where the thefts occurred.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville teen has been arrested after authorities say he stole at least 23 vehicles.
Ariel Mayan, 19, was arrested Monday in the 6000 block of Sheila Road, near Poplar Level Road.
According to arrest reports, Mayan gave police a statement admitting to his involvement in the vehicle thefts. Police say a co-defendant also gave a statement which implicated Mayan.
Authorities say the thefts occurred in the last two months and mostly in neighborhoods in the Fern Creek and Highview areas.
"They would basically go through an entire neighborhood, checking door handles," said Sgt. Steve Healey with LMPD's criminal investigations unit. "If they were open they were stealing the cars"
Police say during a search Mayan was found with a "small bag of marijuana and rolling papers in his pants pocket."
Police say they located a mason jar containing marijuana inside a bag that belonged to Mayan.
"We got very good video footage of two of the individuals we arrested and from there we were able to identify the rest of the members of the group," said Healey.
Mayan is charged with 23 counts of auto theft as well as four counts of theft from a vehicle. He is also facing two counts each of second-degree burglary and theft of a firearm.
Mayan is also charged with marijuana trafficking and engaging in organized crime.
Healey said two juveniles were charged in the case and another juvenile as well as an adult could face charges via direct indictment.
He was being held on a $75,000 cash bond.
