GRAYSON COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) -- More than a dozen trailers and tractors have been stolen from Grayson County since last week, and sheriff's detectives are now searching for the suspects by ground and by air.

The trailers are obviously big and hard to hide, so in addition to knocking on doors, Sheriff Norman Chaffins is using a drone to look for the suspects.

"Just in the last week and a half to two weeks, we've probably had anywhere between 10 to 15 trailers stolen," Chaffins said.

Chaffins said thieves even took a trailer from his office parking lot and a tractor from a state highway garage.

"It was a John Deer tractor worth over $50,000," he said.

That's why Chaffins is using the drone and looking high and low for the suspects.

"We've flown over several properties there," he said. "We get people to call in with leads, and it's very convenient for us to be able to have a drone to be able to fly over a property and look to see if we see any of those trailers."

The Leitchfield Police Department is also working several cases.

"These have been occurring all different hours of the day and night," said Det. Kevin Smith, Public Information Officer for The Leitchfield Police Department.

Smith said the public can help.

"If you see someone hooking up to a trailer in the middle of the night ... if that looks suspicious, give us a call," Smith said..

Mike Houchin, who had two trailers stolen, is not happy about the cost of more than $4,000 to replace one of his trailers, but he said there's something even more important that money.

"If they could be caught, it would actually be more important to the money to me," he said.

If you have any information about the stolen trailers or the suspects, you can call Leitchfield Police or the Grayson County Sheriff's Office.
