LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's a magical time in the city as magicians from around the world come together for a convention in downtown Louisville.

More than 1,200 of the world's best magicians are downtown for acts at the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians convention at the Galt House and the Kentucky Center for Performing Arts.

It's only the third time in history that the world's largest and the world's oldest magic organizations have come together for only the third time in history.

"This is a very historic thing for magicians because we have two separate organizations," said Bruce Kalver, who helped organize the convention.

Magicians at the combined IBM-/SAM convention will compete for the coveted title of North American Champion. Winners and top qualifiers will go on to compete in next year's World Grand Championships of Magic in Busan, South Korea.

Similar to the Olympics, the World Grand Championships of Magic are held every three years in different cities around the world. The convention is also drawing thousands of people in the magic business who cater to performers.

"These are magic dealers from around the world -- Japan, South Korea, England, France -- everywhere," Kalver said. "And they come here to show us what their latest and greatest magic is."

Magicians will be performing at the Kentucky Center this week, and the shows are open to anyone.

"Every night at the Kentucky Center, we have a different magic show with different magicians from around the world," Kalver said.

Believe it or not, organizers say Louisville is famous in the world of magic, with two well-known magicians who got their start on west Main Street.

"This is a very magic city," Kalver said.

"Obviously we have two very famous magicians who are from Louisville who have gone on to do huge things - Lance Burton and Mac King," said Tracy Caufield, co-owner of Caufield's, who remembers watching Burton and King perform in her dad's store as a little girl.

"That's always been kind of a claim to fame for us that we can claim them," Caufield said.

Here's the schedule of performances for the rest of the week:
