Louisville medical organization sending supplies to Haiti

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville is playing a part in establishing a children's hospital in one of the poorest communities in Haiti.

On Wednesday, Louisville-based Supplies Overseas loaded a shipping container with medical equipment bound for Gonaives, Haiti.

The supplies were collected from local hospitals and doctors.

Instead of going to a landfill, the old equipment is recycled and re-purposed so it can save lives in other countries.

"In this container, we have beds, we have baby incubators, all kinds of medical and surgical supplies, right down to the simplest things like band-aids. You know, they don't have anything, so it's not just surgical supplies. They just need the simplest things that we take for granted for every day," said Denise Sears, President and CEO for Supplies Overseas.

The container is expected to reach Haiti by mid-August.
