UPDATE | Louisville teacher charged with sex abuse, sodomy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville teacher was arrested Wednesday after allegedly becoming involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student at Louisville Classical Academy.

According to the arrest report, 36-year-old Andrew Campbell taught during the 2016-17 school year. That's when police say he became involved with one of his 17-year-old students.

In an email from the Head of School, Shelly Ward confirmed Campbell was fired from the school in early June. Louisville Classical Academy is a private school in the Highlands.

The arrest report states once the LMPD Crimes Against Children Unit was aware of the allegations, officers conducted a forensic interview with the victim. The student told officers that Campbell "performed oral sex on her at least three times." The victim also told officers that that she had performed oral sex on him at least three times.

The report states that Campbell confirmed the student's allegations and also admitted to touching her genitals at Waterfront Park and in a field in Old Louisville near Sixth and Hill Streets.

Ward stated once school leaders learned "that there was reason to believe that he may have had inappropriate and improper communications and interactions with a student outside of school," Campbell was immediately fired.

"In addition to terminating his employment," added Ward, "we immediately reported Mr. Campbell to Child Protective Services, notified the parents of the student, and provided the school community with as much detail as we could while maintaining respectful boundaries around the student's privacy."

According to Ward, Child Protective Services then contacted the Louisville Metro Police Department. And Ward said school leaders "disclosed the reason for our concern" to LMPD, as well.

Ward stated in the letter that the school took further action by calling and speaking to most parents.

"Fortunately," added Ward, "none of the conversations led to additional reason for concern."

Campbell was booked into Metro Corrections Wednesday on six counts of sodomy 3rd degree and two counts of sexual abuse 1st degree.

A 'not guilty' plea was entered on his behalf at his arraignment Thursday morning. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim and was released on home incarceration in lieu of bond. The judge warned if he broke that no contact order, he would be arrested again with a $5,000 full cash bond.

Campbell's next court appearance is scheduled for July 24.

Ward closed the letter by saying:

"We are deeply saddened by the implication of this news, but also grateful for the seemingly competent and effective work of Child Protective Services and the Louisville Metro Police Department. Their dedication and professional approach is commendable."
