LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police hope an ice cream social will help residents "warm" up to them.

District 8 held a "Cops and Cones" event outside Kroger on Shelbyville Road on Wednesday night. Officers handed out free ice cream to Kroger customers, listened to their concerns and gave out crime prevention tips liking locking their doors,.

Organizers said the ultimate goal is to break down barriers between police and residents.

"This is really great for our officers, as well, because it gives them the opportunity to come out here, and we've seen a lot of kids come by ... build that relationship," Maj. Jamey Schwab said.

Other divisions are holding similar events around the city. Officers will be outside the Holiday Manor Kroger on Brownsboro Road next Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.
