LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Derek Willis was not among the Kentucky Wildcats who heard their name called on draft night. But he has earned his first NBA contract as a free agent.
The former Bullitt East High School standout signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Pistons Thursday. He averaged 3.5 points and two rebounds for the Pistons summer league team in four games in Orlando.
Willis averaged 7.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game for the Wildcats in his senior year. He shot 40 percent from the three-point line during his UK career, twelfth best in school history.
The terms of the contract were not disclosed, but at least one report says it's likely a non-guaranteed training camp deal. If Willis makes the final roster, he could see plenty of time with the team's G-league affiliate in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
