Farm, food education for kids is focus at Saturday's New Albany Farmers Market

Posted: Updated:

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- Local children are getting a taste of culinary school at the New Albany Farmers Market on Saturday.

"Let Us Learn" and Les Dames d' Escoffier are partnering together to give kids a leg up in their education through its Green Tables mission which connects agriculture to restaurants, schools and kitchen tables across communities.

"Let us Learn" is a local, non-profit organization that brings opportunities to under-served kids, enlisting the international philanthropic organization of women leaders for its educational outreach program, 'Lettuce Learn'. Each child receives a complete uniform, including a t-shirt, chef toque, apron and side towel.

"I love working with kids and I think that food education is really important," said Gina Brown, Founder and Executive Director of Let us Learn, Inc. "I think it affects a child's entire life and we've just been very fortunate. We have just been together for a year, we have tons of sponsorship in the community, but we really could use more donations and especially, volunteers. If you're somebody who enjoys working with kids, you have a background in education or you are a gardener, give me a call and we'll hook you up."

On Saturday, each member of Les Dames d' Escoffier will be paired with a small group of children. They'll going through the market to learn about the local produce and create dishes for visitors.

The kids will be at the New Albany Farmers Market at 202 East Market Street from 9 a.m. to noon.
