New Jersey becomes 3rd state to raise smoking age to 21

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- New Jersey has become the third state to raise the smoking age to 21.

Governor Chris Christie signed a bill Friday, lifting the minimum age to buy tobacco from 19.

Christie said the move would give young people more time to understand the risks of smoking.

He also said the legislation would ease the burden on New Jersey's healthcare system.

The smoking age has been raised to 21 in Hawaii, California and New York City.
