LMPD officers give away more than a dozen bike helmets to kids in Newburg

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some Louisville Metro Police officers spent Friday afternoon looking for dozens of kids.

The search was in the Newburg neighborhood, and while no one was in trouble with the law, it was an important mission: to protect children and maybe even save lives.

"My grandson came in and said there are two police officers coming up on bikes," said Anna Groves, who is a grandparent and lifelong Newburg resident.

It was not how Groves expected to start her Friday.

"You see the police riding up on bikes in your driveway, and you really don't know what to expect. I get it," said Officer Donnie Cardell with LMPD's Community Policing Unit.

But the two officers in her driveway were not there with bad news.

"You guys have bike helmets?" Cardell asked two of the kids.

The officers found plenty of kids who needed helmets. And in some cases, the children needed more.

"Let me get you a helmet, and then I'll see if I can get that bike fixed for you," Cardell said to one kid.

Along the way, the officers fixed several bikes, something Cardell said comes with the territory.

"That's just what it's about," he said. "You find an opportunity, take advantage of it."

Repair work wasn't part of the original plan, but Cardell said it was the most rewarding part of the day.

"He had something caught up in his spokes," he said. "I was able to cut it out, and so now he will be good to go."

And despite the initial shock, an important mission was accomplished.

"We had a really positive outcome today," Cardell said. "It's definitely a good way to get close to the community and bridge that gap for police."

Despite the rain, officers gave out more than a dozen helmets and plan to do this again in the near future.

Bike Louisville partnered with LMPD to provide the helmets.
