Volunteers help prepare Maupin Elementary for the first day of school

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- School is just around the corner for JCPS students and one school is putting the finishing touches to make sure that first day looks its best.

Saturday, dozens of volunteers at Maupin Elementary School in the Parklands neighborhood pitched in to help in whatever they could.

Some painted bulletin boards while others filled backpacks. Some even worked outside and built playground equipment.

More than 70 volunteers helped out.

"What is so exciting is to have this kind of support, and this many people showing up to show that they also know that Maupin matters to the community, it matters to our families, it matters to our staff, and most importantly it matters to our children," Principal Maria Holmes said.

A mural was also created that features Muhammad Ali and reads "Endeavor to be the greatest."
