JCPS clothing blitz begins Monday morning, more than 1,000 uniforms to be distributed

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) – As JCPS students head back to school, an annual program is making sure every student has the outfits they need to kick off the new school year.

In a warehouse just west of downtown Louisville hundreds of shirts, pants, and jackets hang and will soon be chosen by families who need back to school outfits.

JCPS’s Clothing Assistance Program annual CAP Blitz starts Monday, July 31 at Central High School’s football stadium.

“You don’t have to worry about if you’ve got a nice uniform, you are right there taken care of,” 15th District PTA President Autumn Neagle said. “So you get a new uniform shirt, a new uniform pair of pants, five pairs of socks, five pairs of underwear and a belt.”

Grant money is allowing the C.A.P. to give out the uniforms for free.

In addition to the new uniforms, students get a second gently used uniform. Anyone in the family can head into a larger clothing room to pick outfits for babies, toddlers and even grandparents.

However, to receive clothing, appointments must be made ahead of time with a Family Resource Coordinator at the student’s school.

“Monday morning they would call their school and talk to their FRC [Family Resource Coordinator] or FRYSC, they would make an appointment and then they could come down here and get their new uniforms and shop.”

During the blitz, PTA members say they provide clothing to six families every 10 minutes. By the end of the week more than 1,000 students and families will have the back-to-school clothing they need.

While the parents shop, JCPS food services will be providing food for the children and LMPD officers will be on hand to chat with students.

For students who need shoes, four new pairs can be purchased for $50.

The blitz is for any JCPS family that wants assistance, regardless of where they go to school or their socioeconomic background.

The JCPS clothing blitz starts Monday, July 31, 2017.

Appointments can still be made Monday through Friday, with the exception of Wednesday.
