LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Actor and playwright Sam Shepard has died at the age of 73, according to a family spokesperson.

The New York Times reports that Shepard died Thursday at his home in Kentucky.

The family spokesperson says Shepard died of complications from Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Shepard was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 1983 film "The Right Stuff."

He was also a respected playwright with several plays to his credit including "Buried Child" and "True West."

He recently appeared in the Netflix series "Bloodline."

Shepard had a relationship of more than 20 years with actress Jessica Lange.

He leaves behind two sisters and three children Jesse, Hannah and Walker Shepard.
