2018 federal budget could jeopardize LIHEAP funding for Kentucky families

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Tens of thousands of Kentucky families who rely on help to heat their homes in the winter could be left out in the cold.

Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear says the state program that helps families in need pay their heating bills could lose funding in the 2018 federal budget. He's calling on other state attorneys general to push lawmakers to keep the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, intact.

The federal government doles out funding to Kentucky through community agencies.

About 150,000 families receive the benefits.
