Public Safety Committee votes to hold 'No Confidence' vote for LMPD Chief Steve Conrad

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Metro Council Public Safety Committee voted 3-2 on Wednesday to hold a "No Confidence" vote for LMPD Chief Steve Conrad.

The committee will send the "No Confidence" resolution to the full council. It points out Louisville's homicide rate that has tripled in three years, a lack of transparency by Conrad, a lack of action in the LMPD Explorer program sex scandal and low morale within the department.

In a statement, Mayor Greg Fischer has called the move a distraction:

The vote today is a distraction from the real work many people in the city are doing to fight crime.

As the data clearly shows, overall crime is down 4 percent, even as homicides are up.

We're headed in the right direction, as national experts have said.

The best way to help fight crime is to stop pointing fingers and support the work and the plan of Chief Conrad and LMPD -- anything else is not helpful to our citizens that deserve all of our support.

Council members who support the no confidence resolution said new leadership in the department is desperately needed.

“I think you can have a lot of administrative experience, but you may not have the street experience," Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton said. "I think that’s what we’re missing, and I still have no confidence that the chief is the leader we need at this time."

Some officials argued that it is unfair to blame Conrad for crime in the city.

“We should all be working together to try and solve this problems instead of laying it at one man’s feet," Councilwoman Madonna Flood said. "That’s just not fair."

Metro Council is planning to vote on the resolution next Thursday.
