Lightning strike sparks apartment fire in the Highlands

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A lightning strike caused a fire Wednesday afternoon at an apartment building in the Highlands.

Residents nearby said it was the loudest noise they've ever heard, and they soon saw flames.

"It was like an explosion," said Charles Rivera, who lives in the apartment building. "It sounded like a bomb of bazooka ... or like we got nuked."

It happened around 2 p.m. at a four-story apartment building off Midland Avenue between Bardstown and Cherokee Roads.

Firefighters were on the top floor of the building while neighbors said smoke was billowing upward.

"It was extreme," Rivera said. "It was black smoke, and you could see the flames creeping up into the other side of the roof."

Firefighters said the flames broke out in the attic, but several units close to it sustained smoke and water damage

Twenty residents were helped out of the building, and no one was hurt.
