Zero Degrees makes Thai ice cream that looks like sushi

CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -

It doesn't look like ice cream. It looks like sushi.

But Zero Degrees Thai ice cream in the Green Tree Mall definitely tastes like ice cream.

“Is that sushi or ice cream?,” Emma Morlan said as she was shopping in the Green Tree Mall. “I didn't really know.”

Mall shoppers can have dessert and a show.

“We aren't just selling ice cream,” said Fan Chen, co-owner of Zero degrees. “We sell the show and the presentation.”

First, customers pick their ice cream flavor and toppings.

“The fruits, the peaches, the cherries or the cookies,” Chen said.

The toppings are dumped on to a cold surface with the fresh heavy cream.

“It’s 15 below Celsius or so,” Chen said. “It's like regular ice cream, but we use all natural stuff.”

The mixture almost looks like cake batter. The toppings are chopped up and spread out as mixture starts to freeze. Then, the fun part starts.

Chen rolls up the ice cream and serves it within a few minutes.

“It's like the sushi rolls,” he said.

Chen also serves his Thai Ice Cream in Mall St. Matthews.  He said it's so popular he was recently asked to open another shop in the Green Tree Mall.

“I said, 'Why not?'” he said.

He's originally from China and saw the idea for Thai Ice Cream when he lived in New York City. He brought the idea with him when he moved to Kentucky and opened Zero Degrees with his business partner, who conveniently used to be a Sushi Chef.

“A lot of people say it's like hibachi ice cream,” he said.

Zero Degrees has been wowing customers in both locations since the Green Tree Mall shop opened in late-July next to Kay Jewelers and Bath and Body Works. .

“We are still doing good right now,” he said.

Chen said sometimes the wait can be as long as 30 minutes for a cup.
