Louisville mayor says SummerWorks teen job program has set new record

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville leaders are calling this year's SummerWorks program "record-breaking."

Mayor Greg Fischer announced Thursday morning that more than 5,200 teens and young adults were hired by local companies for the summer. That's more than last year's total, which was a program record also.

This year, jobs included positions at Kentucky Kingdom, Ford and GE Appliances. as well as non-profit organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

In addition to a summer job, those hired received training for resume building and job interviews.

"I want to emphasize that this benefit works both ways," said Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. "As these young employees gain invaluable lessons about work and life skills, their employers also gain fresh perspectives in a pipeline of trained future employees."

The SummerWorks program started in 2011.
