62 storage units burglarized in New Albany

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- New Albany Police are searching for the people they say broke into dozens of storage units, leaving a mess inside and frustrating renters.

The incident allegedly happened between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday at Storage Express at the corner of Progress Boulevard and Park Place. The person or persons responsible used lock cutters to break

“Your sanctity is violated ... It’s very upsetting,” said Michael Thomas, who has been renting a unit for the past eight years. “I had some of my ammunition missing, a couple car stereos, and that is just the things I know of.”

Several security cameras monitor the property, but a Storage Express spokesperson said some of the cameras appeared to be turned away from a few storage buildings.

“We are incredibly disappointed to discover these break-ins," said Janna Jackson, a spokesperson for Storage Express.” We have reached out to all our customers yesterday and today."

New Albany Police are asking any renter who may have had items stolen to contact police so a report can be taken and items can be tallied.

Angela Sermon-Pieper is in the process of moving and has many items at the facility. She said her heart sank when she found out about the break-ins.

"My reaction when I got the phone call …I was in tears," she said. "I had no idea what happened to all of our stuff. I mean, there’s like four boxes of stuff that if something had happened to it, I would be a puddle on the ground.”

Storage Express placed new locks on the affected units and gave renters new combinations as police continue to investigate.

Anyone with information to this crime or to report items stolen are urged to call New Albany Police at 812-944-6411 or the tip line at 948-NAPD.
