3 arrested in Indiana for drug, weapon charges after child welfare check
Indiana Conservation Officers and officials from the Scott and Washington County Sheriff's Departments made the arrests.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police arrested three people in southern Indiana on several drug and weapons charges.
Authorities said 35-year-old Joshua Purlee, of Floyds Knobs, and 58-year-old Deloris Newton of Austin, Indiana, were arrested in Washington County. Deloris' husband, 52-year-old James Newton, also from Austin, Indiana, was arrested in Scott County.
Officials said Indiana Conservation Officers and an officer with the Washington County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of a young girl playing by herself in the rain at the Elk Creek Lake Public Fishing Area.
According to authorities, officers located the girl alone in a vehicle, while her father, Joshua Purlee, was in another vehicle with Deloris Newton. Police said officers searched Purlee and Deloris Newton and found close to 30 grams of meth, marijuana, prescription pills and cash. Purlee and Deloris Newton were taken into custody, and the child was placed with a relative.
Investigators said an officer obtained a search warrant for Deloris and James Newton's home, and authorities found more meth, prescription pills, paraphernalia and firearms. Officials said her husband, James, was at the home and was taken into custody.
According to officials, nearly 43 grams of meth, several hundred prescription pills, marijuana, paraphernalia and 13 firearms were confiscated.
Indiana Conservation Officer Jim Schreck credits the entire case to one person concerned about a little girl alone in the rain.
“This case came from a singular phone call,” Schreck said. “One person that cared enough about this area and the young child made that phone call, as a result, what I would call dangerous drug dealers are off the streets and out of these recreation areas.”
Purlee and James and Deloris Newton are all charged with dealing in meth, meth possession, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of paraphernalia.
Purlee and James Newton are also charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Purlee faces an additional charge of neglect of a dependent.
