New study says opioid overdose figures could be much higher than suspected

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Nearly 100 Americans die from opioid overdoses each day, but the numbers could be much higher.

A study found 20-25 percent of death certificates don't list specific drugs as a cause, so researchers believe the death rate could be almost 25 percent higher than previously estimated.

The latest numbers also show overdose deaths rose in 2016, despite efforts to stop the epidemic. The CDC blames prescriptions for the increase.
