LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Nearly 150 people from 53 countries were sworn in as new American citizens at the Louisville Free Library Thursday.

One of today's speakers is also an immigrant and a Paralympic world record holder. He spoke of how much his own naturalization ceremony meant to him.

"My belief in America was reinforced," said Vitalis Lanshima. "My belief in the place that I chose to call home -- that I chose to live -- was reinforced. You see, for some, their journey began when the Mayflower set sail from England. And for some of us, our journey began when we decided to migrate to the United States."

In order to become a citizen, they had to pass an application test that includes having basic knowledge of U.S. government and being able to read, write and speak basic English.
