Hundreds of students get new backpacks at Algonquin neighborhood back to school festival

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- As summer slowly begins to wrap up, residents of the Algonquin neighborhood held their community back to school festival Saturday.

Councilwoman Mary Woolridge hosted the event, complete with a backpack giveaway and free hot dogs.

City funds allocated to the Algonquin neighborhood helped support the festival.

Handing out backpacks makes sure all the kids start school on the same page.

"Often times, if they don't have the supplies, then they feel sheltered or neglected, so now they have the same supplies and backpacks the other kids have so they feel more a part of the education experience," said Anna Young, who was picking up a backpack for her great nephew.

More than 500 students received new backpacks.
