Veterans, active military members attend job fair for a second chance at a career

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – More than 100 veterans and active military members spent Sunday afternoon at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts looking for a new beginning.

The second annual Rally Point: Kentuckiana resource and job fair featured more than 50 vendors and careers for men and woman in the armed forces.

For many, Sunday a day for second chances.

“I have a lot of panic attacks, and now I have Parkinson’s to deal with, too, and he helps me with all of those,” said John Wells, while looking down as his service dog Johnny Cash.

Wells got Johnny through Dogs Helping Heroes, which was represented at the job fair Sunday.

“Yeah, this is awesome. When I got back from Vietnam we didn’t have this. There wasn’t a place we could go where there was a collection of employers like this,” Wells said.

Organizations like Active Heroes, The USO, and all branches of the military were represented.

Judy Callaway is a 12-year Gulf War Veteran, and said women are often overlooked when it comes to veteran services and what is offered.

“We are a lot of times forgotten about. People think I am a spouse or something like that. I was actively serving,” Callaway said.

Upstairs, massages and haircuts were offered as a way to say thank you and cut down on the stress that can come with searching for that next career path.

“It was pretty rough even when you were activated for a short time. You would come back and people didn’t really understand you,” said Ed Hinkle, who is a Veteran and 12-year U.S. Army Reserve.

Tickets are still available for the group’s Rally for our Heroes Concert  on Sept. 14 at the Kentucky Center featuring Country Singer Trace Adkins.
