LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An educator who has spent the past few years helping low-performing schools with turnaround efforts has been selected as the new principal of Southern High School.

Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Marty Pollio named Tyler Shearon to the post on Monday. He was one of five people who interviewed for the job over the weekend.

"I'm very excited about this opportunity and I'm eager to get started," Shearon told WRDB in an interview on Monday, adding the first thing at the top of his list to meet with teachers and staff of Tuesday.

Shearon is a native of Nashville, but moved to Louisville in 2007 through Teach Kentucky, a recruitment program that seeks to attract motivated young people to teach in Kentucky's public schools.

He worked for three years as a science teacher at Olmsted Academy North and then spent another two years at Fern Creek High. He was named an assistant principal at the Academy @ Shawnee during the 2012-13 year.

For the past two years, he has worked as an educational recovery leader through the Kentucky Department of Education to help with several of Jefferson County’s priority schools. This year, he was assigned to work with Seneca and Western High schools.

"I'm a very visible administrator, I enjoy being around staff and students whether it be in the classrooms, hallways or at extra curricular activities," he said.

In an email to staff in announcing the appointment, JCPS assistant superintendent Paige Hartstern said Shearon has "extensive experience with educational leadership and (is) a true commitment to our district."

Shearon replaces the school's previous leader, Bryce Hibbard, who retired from JCPS on July 31 to take the middle school principal post at Christian Academy of Louisville.
