Ankle bracelets to test Louisville DUI offenders' sweat to monitor alcohol levels

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville is going high-tech to curb drunk driving in a fight to save lives.

Ankle bracelets will go on repeat DUI offenders to test their bodies for booze 24 hours a day.

The anklets take readings every 30-minutes from an offenders' sweat. They're to be worn while a DUI suspect is awaiting trial or as a part of a plea deal.

Numbers show the need. Kentucky saw more than 4,000 alcohol-involved crashes last year. As a result of those crashes,119 people died.

"We have another tool now to put in our tool box to try to save lives that we didn't have before," said Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell.

The bracelets have driven down DUI rates in communities like San Diego, California and York County, Pennsylvania.
