Boaters concerned of large stumps in Ohio River after woman killed in late-night accident

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Authorities have identified a woman who died after a boat crashed into a barge Monday night on the Ohio River.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office, that woman has been identified as 46-year-old Robyn Storr, a Louisville resident.

Police said they responded to reports of a boat vs. barge collision around 10:45 p.m. Monday near the Limestone Clubhouse, just south of Captain's Quarters along River Road.

A boat allegedly hit a barge in the river, causing the driver of the boat to lose control. Investigators said  Storr, who was also on the boat, died at the scene. Her cause of death is listed as "multiple blunt force injuries in a boat vs. barge collision."

"The biggest obstacle is the ones you don’t see, and that is the logs that have been waterlogged, and they are already under the water," said David Cecil, who would often see Storr while on the river.

Cecil said the lower water level is causing larger stumps and branches to stick out of the water and many are nearly impossible to see at night. He said many of the larger branches shift, so if they are seen one day they could be moved or gone the next.

A large stump can be seen sticking out of the water about 100 yards from a nearby barge.

"I feel that should be marked," Cecil said. "There is plenty of technology out there to mark things things with a solar light."

Storr's family said she loved the water and was out boating as often as possible.

Police said the driver of the boat was rushed to University Hospital and is expected to recover.

LMPD's Homicide Unit is treating the incident as a death investigation.
