LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A firefighter died in the line of duty in Campbellsburg, Kentucky.

Thomas McBride, 60, died of an apparent heart attack, officials said.. He was participating in search and rescue training around 9 p.m. Thursday when he complained of breathing problems.

McBride refused medical treatment and requested to return to training when he felt better. Instead, he was assigned to pump operations.

He collapsed a short time later and died at the hospital.

McBride had spent 14 years as a firefighter for three different departments.

"He was, first of all, very passionate about the fire service," Campbellsburg Fire Chief David Noe said. "He was very intelligent."

McBridge's fellow firefighters said he was a great guy and a valuable part of the team.

"He was a problem-solver ... any issue that you have," Noe said. "If we had a truck that broke down on the scene or something went wrong on an emergency scene, he was the one in the background working."

McBride is survived by a son, daughter and grandson. The visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception in La Grange. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday.
