LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The three University of Louisville men's basketball captains addressed the media Friday night after David Padgett was named interim head coach.

After being hit by another bombshell, team captains Quentin Snider, Anas Mahmoud and Deng Adel found it hard to stay positive at first. It's been a tough week for the team, but the toughest part, the players said, is not knowing what the real truth is.

“I think that workouts and stuff helped us get away from it," Mahmoud said. "We just rallied around each other really."

After hearing head coach Rick Pitino was placed on leave, the team thought Assistant Coach David Padgett would be their best fit.

“He has a history with us," Adel said. "He's a player’s coach, so he has a lot of different relationships with all of us."

“He was my mentor since I got here," Mahmoud added. "He always talked to me about how to get better as a center. I wouldn’t be where I am right now without DP.”

They said it settles their anxiety that Padgett played for Pitino, and as Pitino’s assistant coach, he knows the system. With that combo, they said there won't be a lot of changes.

“Bringing in a complete new coach with a complete new philosophy is something we didn't want to happen for us right now because we don't have the time to learn something new,” Mahmoud said.

Having dealt with past scandals in the basketball program, the captains are leaders to the young team.

“We dealt with it fine. You know you gotta stay positive, keep your head up,” Mahmoud said.

“We just got to bring the young guys together," Snider added. "Basically communicate, keep working and all that."

And despite all the noise around them, they still have one unified goal.

“We're here to play basketball," Mahmoud said. "We're gonna go out there. We're going to work hard and do the best thing we could ever do."

“Nothing’s going to stop us, because at the end of the day we still got to go out on the floor and perform,” Adel added.

The team’s first practice is on Sunday, and the first game is next month.
