Local mom collects suitcases and blankets for foster kids
Every year, thousands of kids enter foster care, often given nothing but a trash bag to carry their only belongings. Now one local foster mom is doing something about it.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Every year, thousands of kids enter foster care, often given nothing but a trash bag to carry their only belongings. But now, thanks to one local foster mom, many of those children have something to call their own.
Charlene Shipley has been collecting bags and blankets for kids in the foster care system. On Thursday, those bags were given to the kids, just in time for Christmas.
The project was inspired by Shipley's foster daughter.
"So my foster daughter's name is Roo, and she's special needs," said Shipley. "And I just look at her and it breaks my heart to know what she's been through, and the fact that all she would be handed is a trash bag...it broke my heart."
More than 1,000 suitcases and blankets were collected over the span of six weeks.
