Wintry blast shutters schools, offices across Indiana

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A blast of freezing rain, sleet and snow has shuttered schools, government offices and businesses across Indiana.

While vehicle slide-offs snarled traffic on highways and local roads across the state Friday, Gibson County in southwestern Indiana issued a travel warning directing the public to refrain from all travel. At least 18 other counties across the state issued travel watches, recommending only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations.

Bartholomew, Hamilton, Jackson and Perry counties all closed their government offices for the day.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning through Friday night for most of southern Indiana, with up to 5 inches of snow and some ice accumulation forecast. Lower snow amounts were expected in central and northern Indiana.
