POLICE: Cashier conducted $2K in false transactions at St. Matthews Babies 'R' Us

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- St. Matthews Police have arrested a woman authorities say stole from the store where she was employed as a cashier.

Janel Richie, 28, was arrested Monday at the Babies "R" Us store, located at 4623 Shelbyville Road.

According to an arrest report, Richie was, "responsible for several fraudulent transactions."

Police say in one transaction, Richie was recorded on video transferring 21 items to an unknown customer worth a total of $764.11. Officials say Richie conducted a second transaction with 30 stolen items that totaled $1,470.56. She conducted a third transaction with eight items that totaled $151.96, according to police. Investigators say a fourth transaction totaled $17.97. Police say the fifth and final final transaction was for one item worth $24.99.

The total of all five transactions came to $2,429.59.

Police say based on interaction between the suspect and the customers, a witness believed Richie knew all of the customers involved in the fake transactions.

Richie is charged with two counts of theft by unlawful taking. Metro Corrections officials say she was released on bond Tuesday morning.
