LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Louisville's "Give a Day, Mayor's Week of Service" encourages people to lend a hand and give back, April 14 through the 22, 2018. It's a week of volunteer activities around the city.
Mayor Greg Fischer urges citizens, businesses and civic groups to join in and volunteer. Louisville non-profit groups, schools and churches benefit from the extra help. Organizations like Brightside, Metro United Way, Dare to Care, WaterStep and Love the Hungry get some extra work done.
Established in 2012, Love the Hungry, Inc. (formerly Kids Against Hunger-Louisville) brings nourishment and hope to children and families throughout the world. Co-founded by Dale and Tonja Oelker, volunteers assist in packaging nutritious meals for children in developing countries. 15% of the total meals packaged are provided to Kentuckiana agencies to assist local families in need.
More than 29,000 volunteers have participated in Love the Hungry packaging events - producing more than 5,000,000 meals. They hope to package 50,000 meals by the end of the 2018 "Give a Day" event.
