LEWIS | WKU QB situation still in question after scrimmage
WKU's four QBs all got reps in Saturday's spring football game. Redshirt senior Drew Eckels may have the lead in the race for 2018 starter
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WDRB) - Western Kentucky redshirt senior quarterback Drew Eckels took snaps with the first-team in Saturday's Red-White scrimmage, but he's far from saying he's the starter when fall camp opens.
"As of right now, I'm just playing where they put me. I can't name where I am (on the depth chart) right now" Eckels said after the 92-play scrimmage.
Neither could second year head coach Mark Sanford.
"We're going to continue to evaluate the film. Obviously I'll have to take a look at this spring game. There's a lot of nuances you see in watching the film in terms of what we're asking them to do," Sanford said.
Along with Eckels, redshirt sophomore Steven Duncan is the only other returning quarterback. Redshirt freshman Davis Shanley and Davidson transfer Grayson Kulick also saw time at QB in the scrimmage. WKU has to replace Mike White, a two-time CUSA second-team all-conference selection.
Sanford says he expects to at least have some kind of depth chart in the next few weeks.
WKU opens the season August 31st at Wisconsin.
