CRAWFORD | Quip out of the Kentucky Derby, Asmussen's Combatant moves in
Quip is out of the Kentucky Derby after his connections decided to point him toward the Preakness, opening the door for Steve Asmussen's Combatant.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Quip, the winner of the Tampa Bay Derby, will skip the Kentucky Derby after his connections decided not to run him following a three-week layoff. Instead, they will likely point him toward the Preakness Stakes.
Eliot Walden, CEO of racing operations for WinStar Farm, told the Daily Racing Form that Quip is in fine health, but that, “We wanted a little more time with him.”
Quip’s departure puts Steve Asmussen’s Combatant, fourth in the Arkansas Derby, into the field. With concerns that European shipper Gronkowski might not make the trip to Louisville, the Jerry Hollandorfer-trained Instilled Regard could make the field next. Hollandorfer was third in last year’s Derby with Battle of Midway, who went on to win the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile in the fall.
