LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say a 69-year-old woman was found shot to death at an east Louisville apartment Monday afternoon -- and her son is now charged with her murder.

Police arrested 38-year-old Gavin Perkins Monday evening.

Also Monday night, the Jefferson County Coroner identified the victim as 69-year-old Ruth Perkins. She died of multiple gunshot wounds.

According to Louisville Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell, officers were called to an apartment in the 10500 block of Southern Meadows Drive, near Brownsboro Road, at about 3 p.m. on a report of "trouble."

When officers arrived, they found Ruth Perkins suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Late Monday night, police announced that Gavin Perkins, the woman's son, is charged with murder and domestic violence.

Mitchell called the case an "isolated incident," but added that people should remain vigilant wherever they live, "considering the climate of our country today."

Neighbors say the area is extremely quiet and are shocked by the violence.

"So I go walking in and there is all this debris on the ground and I’m like, 'what’s going on?'" said Margie Miller, who lives next to the victim. "She's got five little grandbabies that love her to death. It's awful. Just awful."
