FRANKFORT, Ky. (WDRB) -- Mourners made their way into the Kentucky state capitol rotunda carrying an empty coffin.

University students staged a mock funeral procession on Monday to protest cuts to higher education.

Students say the coffin represents the educational programs lawmakers 'killed' with budget cuts.

Twenty-five million dollars in cuts at Eastern Kentucky University led to plans to close its theater program and its Danville campus. It also cut about 150 jobs.

"I believe that the people who have made these decisions will regret this. They will see how much the arts really affect everyday life, not just college campuses, but also the whole state," said EKU student Logan Burris.

The university's president blames declining enrollment and almost a decade of budget cuts.
