LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say the Kentucky State Trooper who fell 30 feet off a foot bridge on  I-71 in Henry County after a semi crash Wednesday morning is awake, talking and alert.

Police say Trooper Michael "Mickey" Gonterman was upgraded from critical condition and is now stable.

His family says they appreciate the support and prayers.

KSP says Gonterman has extensive injuries including several fractures to his extremities and an injury to his shoulder and vertebrae.

John Crawford, 56, and Gonterman were trying to corral some dogs in the middle of the interstate Wednesday morning. As they were walking back to their vehicles on the shoulder of the roadway, a semi rear ended a box truck, which caused it to overturn.

Crawford was trapped under the box truck and died.

Gonterman was hit by the truck and fell off the footbridge.
