Churchill Downs ready to host first ever Champions Day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The spotlight is ready to shine bright on Churchill Downs. But first, the finishing touches must be made. Last minute construction, and a fresh coat of paint for Barbaro are just some of the preparations in motion.

"We have a Derby party every year," Derby fan Libby Jecker said.

But it's not just Derby day we celebrate. It's the whole week, and now there's a new event joining Derby, Oaks, and Thurby.

"Champions Day is a new addition to Kentucky Derby week," Darren Rogers, with Churchill Downs, said. "We're going to celebrate the history and tradition of some of the past Derby winners."

It will happen on Tuesday of Derby Week. In addition to the usual races legendary jockeys and trainers will be in the Paddock for autograph sessions.

Calvin Borel, Pat Day, Steve Cauthen, D. Wayne Lukas, Carl Nafzger, and Todd Pletcher will all be part of it.

The day will also offer pointers to help step up your game at the betting window.

"We're going to have some industry insiders providing their insight on how to handicap the Kentucky Derby," Rogers said.

The big board will show highlights of history made under the Twin Spires since 1875.

It's another day of racing that the track and race fanatics hope will see the success Thurby, Oaks, and Derby have before it.

Gates open at 11:00 a.m. for Champions Day. General Admission tickets cost $10.
