LEWIS | Blue Grass foes preparing for rematch in Derby 144

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – The top two finishers in the Blue Grass Stakes got in works Saturday morning ahead of Kentucky Derby 144.

Blue Grass winner Good Magic put in his final work and trainer Chad Brown doubled-down on his assertion that the juvenile champion is his best chance yet to win the Run for the Roses.

“This is as good as he’s ever worked,” Brown said after Good Magic worked a half in 49.40. “He went off in the Breeder’s Cup after a really good breeze and ran well. I think it’s taken all winter and spring to get him to what we see today, and that’s his very best.”

Trainer Mark Casse was pleased with Blue Grass runner-up Flameaway’s Saturday work, a quick half in 47.80, although that was a little too quick for Casse.

“Thank goodness we had a radio on the rider because we stopped him at about the 3/16 pole. We said ‘slow him down’ because he was going to go 46 and change and that’s not really what I wanted (but) I thought he went really well,” Casse said.

The field will be set Tuesday when the post positions are drawn.  That could very well determine the setup for both horses, but both trainers can already envision what needs to happen.

“Hopefully he gets a clean break,” Brown said of Good Magic. “He seems to have good gate speed, this horse. If he can secure a spot in the front half of the field, saving some ground on the first turn, that would be ideal.”

For Casse, it’s more about the finish.

“The only thing I want to tell (jockey) Jose (Lezcano) is when they turn for home, I would like to be on the lead,” Casse said.
